Excellent Book!

I never like to lose more than 10 pips on one trade, it's like a red line for me that separates staying cool in a trade and doubt taking over: this book fits my risk profile to the pip-> therefore, a scalper I am.

After making it halfway through the book and putting the setups to the test, it has become clear to me that Bob (hope you don't mind me calling you Bob) went the extra mile to uncover the fundamental details that are required to successfully trade his setups. In my experience, 98% of the other books out there (especially Forex books) leave those little but essential details up to you to figure out over time. The problem with that is, if you are lazy and want something for nothing like many of us do, you are probably gonna drop those other books fairly quickly, jump back on your horse, and continue your search for the Holy Grail (instead of doing the hard work that is required to be successful with them).

Good news, in this book, Bob has already done all of the hard work for you. This book is like food-stamps for the starving trader. I highly recommend this book.

Most Excellent

For some time I have wanted to jump into learning price action trading. The trouble is, there is not a lot of material out there. Of course, there are Al Brooks' excellent books. But, if you are like me, digesting and understanding Brooks is like unraveling riddles of the sphinx - most difficult and fraught with expensive mistakes. Enter Bob Volman's book. Volman's lucid treatment of what could be a dry subject is refreshing. Volman's writing is clear, sometimes funny, and terribly engaging.

Volman presents each chapter with a general introduction to an idea. He then proceeds to give many examples with much, much commentary. At first, I was a little dissapointed with the book. Flip through it, and there are relatively few charts. But, it is only an illusion. There are few charts per page because Volman explains so much for each chart. And again, the reading isn't dry. Volman has a witty flair for English and a dry sense of humor that makes the multi-paragraph (and page) commentary for each chart seem like a short figure caption.

This is the real stuff, too. No smoke and mirrors, laggy indicators and outlandish performance metrics. Read Volman's book, and turn a simple candlestick chart into an amazing drama of tug-o-war.

First impressions

Well I've never heard of Bob Volman or of Light Tower Publishing but after reading this book I can tell you that it's on par with what I've read from Al Brooks. The author has a very readable and insightful style which makes for strangely quick reading for this subject.

In some ways it strikes me as a sort of a price action short hand when you compare it to Al Brooks writings but nevertheless I think it very insightful and I plan on using some of the methods in trading equities.

I don't remember anything in the book that struck me as off or not matching my experience in the market. Every chapter rings true and fits the true reality of day trading like only a very small percentage of trading books do. I found myself nodding my head quite a few times in agreement with Bob's lucid explanations of many of the details of trading as a whole. My favorite quote is... "simple because the edge is not a thing that can surface by itself. It can only be obtained by the blood, sweat and tears of committing oneself to countless hours of studying markets, patterns, set ups and price action principles."

A `white-glove test' for becoming lean

20 Keys is a powerful `white-glove test' for a lean-type environment. Mr Kobayoshi's system not only reveals how far along your operation is on the journey toward perfection, but it also helps pinpoint facets where improvements are needed. Find your shortcomings and strengths. Furthermore, it can provide a roadmap of recommended areas to target to reach the end goal from your self-assessed position. It will not provide all the specific tools, but it will walk you through to a logical implementation plan; learn what areas to concentrate on, do your how-to research, and fill in the appropriate details as needed. If you understand lean practices, 20 Keys may simply help you identify where to start and where to proceed to; you select the right tools from all those already at your disposal to create a coordinated strategy.

The original edition of this book was a bit difficult to follow and to use as a reference. To my surprise, the newer revised version almost appears to be a complete rewrite. Even the many illustrations laced throughout the book have changed. Many sections have been condensed, and the capture of key thoughts as bullet-point outlines seems more prevalent. The book has also been expanded with case studies and an index. Buy the revised edition for the best introduction to the 20 Keys. The earlier release has been readily available for just a few dollars (a bargain), so get the original edition too for additional insights on points of particular interest.

It provides a synergistic and integrated framework as a system for improvement and helps organisations to build the organisational fortitude layer by layer. His insight crosses many disciplines from management and leadership, organisation culture, sustainability and supply chain as well as the normal 4S, changeover etc. It is written at a practical level but don't be misled by this simplicity. If one is serious about operational excellence then this book gives a sound framework and excellent path to follow.

By then, an increasingly sophisticated public demanded more modern-looking appliances than engineers could produce, and a new breed of designers entered the manufacturing world to provide them. During the Depression, modern designs not only increased sales but resulted in the kitchen appliances we now use. About the Author
Carroll Gantz is a professional industrial designer who holds several dozen patents. A long-time Black & Decker design director, and a Carnegie Mellon University professor, he is a past president of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). He lives on Seabrook Island in South Carolina.

Maybe more than you want to know about refrigeration, but an engaging, if somewhat superficial history.

This is an interesting read, but the book strikes me as not well organized. Gantz writes well and with enthusiasm, but he cobbles together three themes--the history of and impact of refrigeration, the history of specific appliance development and product design. The last quarter of the book seems to be to be mostly about product design rather than a more detailed consideration of, say, air conditioning technology. I think it would be a better book if these were separated out into sections, perhaps general history, history and development of specific technologies and design.

There are lots of illustrations that cover some of the inventors, and many products from specific decades that help his descriptions become clearer.

Among the interesting details are older folk technologies for cooling, and that the classical Greeks and Romans enjoyed snow and ice cooled foods, preserving ice in insulated structures (used loosely--an insulated hole in the ground or a modified cave would work). The business of insulated ice so as to make it available in warm seasons was far more widespread and older than I had known. I knew about Yankee merchants selling ice in places like Havana and New Orleans. The ice trade itself in the US alone was large, using machines to make ice then delivered by horse-drawn wagons seems ironic, but 8 million tons of ice was in the industry in the US in 1880, using a wild variety of ice boxes.

The story of the development of ice-making, refrigerating and air conditioning technologies dominates the latter portion of the book. It's also an interesting example of technologies merging. Some big cooling systems were steam-powered, but the rather quick electrification of the US after 1900 fed into other systems, including powering smaller and therefore home-usable systems. In 1907 8% of US homes were wired for electricity, 16% by 1912 and 35% by 1920. DC and AC current systems vied for awhile, and it took some time to develop a market system--electricity suppliers sold home appliances to increase sales of their energy product, for example.

There's lots more. The book gets slow in spots, but the author's enthusiasm never flags. Chapter 9 discusses changes in regulation and climate change and what it means for the industries, and the challenges that are offered by need for efficiency and reduced pollution. Chapter 10 is something of an anticlimax, "Snow and Ice Redux," which points out winter sports, skiing, iceboating, ice hotels, ice sculpture and more.

Before adopting the scholarly persona, I ask your indulgence for some personal comments. If you are like my students at The Sage Colleges in upstate New York (the women's Russell Sage College in Troy, and its affiliated co-educational Sage College of Albany), you will oblige me. This book's first edition was completed over a decade ago, bringing the incomparable thrill that a first book brings to one who grew up loving books and the academic track, among life's many potentials. I've been pleased to see it appear in Portugese and Russian translations (thanks to the connections that Prentice Hall has made). Its cycles of revision have become part of the rhythm of my life. The first revision (second edition) marked my son's college graduation and the beginning of his career as an architect, and so it seemed each cycle would correspond to a personal step forward, but it was not to be. The next edition was the time when my mother died unexpectedly, plunging me into a period of personal exploration in which I came to realize that the author Susan was in large part the legacy of my mother's potential (had life circumstance and schizophrenia not blocked her). As I write the preface for the fourth edition of this text, I am saddened that the major event during this interval is my father's death; his "are you still writing?" questions are now memory. So this edition is a bittersweet personal milestone for me, as I change the book's dedication, as always to my parents, to the past tense. Writing pulls motivations from deep in the psyche, even in textbook form (as contrasted with the creative freedom that I imagine novelists enjoy). Sometimes those motivations inspire hard work and creativity, though they also bring writing blocks (as my patient editors have witnessed). Yet textbook writing also produces an object impersonal enough to be shared with strangers, and so I turn attention from the personal to that which I share with my mostly anonymous readers.

Personality theory and research are exciting, as an academic place to map the bridges between our biological nature (with its potential and its limitations) and the culture that, for better or for worse, we have created. On both fronts, personality theory is advancing. Current biological knowledge adds details to the vision of early personality theorists, who recognized the importance if not the mechanisms of the nature side of the nature-nurture issue. Cultural awareness, though still rather limited in our theories, points to the higher-order reorganization of our innate potential that can take us to the divine or the demonic, and to an interface of personality with social psychology and related fields in the social sciences.

This edition brings some noteworthy changes. Biological trait approaches have, after expansion in previous editions, been promoted to their own chapter, reflecting their growing importance in personality theory and research. The importance of biology to personality has been a familiar theme throughout the history of the field, but only now, with studies of heredity and of physiological correlates of personality, do we have a way to detail the way heredity influences personality. In addition, evolutionary and other biological approaches have become sophisticated enough to permit consideration of individual developmental experience (such as the effects of reward and punishment), making biological approaches more applicable to themes traditionally important in the field of personality. Object relations theory, mentioned in earlier editions, is now given its own major section. It is placed in the Karen Homey chapter, since I consider her often neglected statements about the role of interpersonal relationships to be the clearest conceptual connection with the object relations approach, though perusal of the references cited by most papers in that area would not lead to this placement. The approach may be growing to demand its own chapter in the future (but what to displace? Ah, that's the author's nightmare.) Positive psychology has emerged as a current focus for the debates that humanistic psychologists have long considered, and so it 4s added to the humanistic perspective.

In addition, I have updated content within various chapters, adding here and pruning there. Researchers have contributed to sound, empirically based developments in existing theories: empirical studies of defense mechanisms in psychoanalytic theory; developmental and adult studies of attachment; cognitive research on suppression and memory, as some examples. The explosion of biological knowledge finds connections with diverse topics (including memory, learning, and traits), so biological material is referenced in many places. Although I have humbly toned down some of my comments in earlier editions about moving toward a more integrated, multi-level theory, there are enough developments in our field at all levels, from biological bases of personality, to increasing interest in cultural themes, to the almost visionary sentiments expressed in humanistic and positive psychology, to make me optimistic about an integrated multi-level theory. In fact, the connections among various theories have always been present, though not developed and often not highlighted in textbooks, since it is easier to present beginning students with distinctions among theories than with bridges connecting them. The theories that will be complex enough to incorporate multiple levels of explanation will not have the simple, literary quality of early theories, and they move scientific psychology farther from "pop psychology," but they are likely to contribute much more to our understanding.

The Illustrative Biographies that have been a feature of this text since the first edition are now reformatted, in response to reviewers' and teachers' requests for application of several theories to each biography, instead of only one theory, as in previous editions. So I have placed the biographies within the six Parts of the book instead of within each theoretical Chapter, in order to make systematic interpretation of these personalities from related theories in the same perspective. In addition, each biographical analysis includes suggestions about how theories in other theoretical perspectives could be applied; perhaps students and teachers would like to expand on these suggestions in their classes. Several of these Illustrative Biographies describe people not included in previous editions, and I hope you enjoy reading about them as much as I enjoyed reading their life stories (following the advice of Disraeli, quoted in Chapter 1).

Unfortunately I have not been able to incorporate all of their advice, but even the suggestions that are not explicitly incorporated in this edition are incubating in my thoughts about personality and may surface later. In some cases, the biographies students have chosen to analyze for course assignments have inspired my choices for this new edition, though the interpretations are my own.

As I write these remarks, the world is debating the future of the Middle East and America's military actions. The memory of the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001 still haunt us. My son stood close enough to New York's World Trade Center during the attack to witness the horror of it, and that close call, especially since it came not long after my father's death, gave me a greater appreciation of the precious yet fragile gift of peace. Many people responded, as terror management theory would predict and as my student Cindy Smith verified in her honors research, with a surge of patriotism. The study of individual personalities, exciting as it is, must be supplemented by insights from other disciplines if we are to live wisely; personality dynamics sometimes resonate on the drums of history, and our continuing search for understanding has an urgency.

Sublime Introductory Textbook

A wonderful introduction to the major personality theorists of the past century or so -- from Freud to Kelly -- written with insight, clarity, and a creative educational 'gimmick' that encourages the reader to apply the theories to many well-known personalities. Not only does the reader learn the fundamental ideas of theorists such as Jung, Adler, and Maslow; he applies those concepts to analyze the likes of Shirley MacLaine, Donald Trump, and Martin Luther King.
If a textbook could be self-actualized, this one is it. Excellent!

Out-dated Theories

I had to purchase this text for my "Psychology of Personality" class. While my online shopping experience was great, I don't even know where to start with the short-comings of the text book. Who in their right mind would choose this as a learning tool?! Not only is it VERY poorly written (it doesn't flow at all, it's so choppy and semantic and boring - this coming from a psych. major - that it's incredibly hard to read, let alone retain the information).

Secondly, the theorists in the book are people like Freud and Jung. People who, granted, contributed a great deal to psychology, but who's theories are NOT used in therapeutic practices in current days. To try to apply them as such is ridiculous.

Lastly, each theorist has their own point of view, and contradicts the other (and themself most of the time), yet the author seems to uphold the view of each theorist... Which theory is one to assume is the most true? Of course I don't agree with any, but if one were looking for one to choose, one wouldn't know which one was 'the right one'....

It's almost like it was written by some grad student for extra-credit... It's like a REALLY LONG, REALLY bad term paper...
