Mark Hammer Sr., Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering, is a writer of Environmental Engineering publications in the United States and Saudi Arabia. During his long tenure as a professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Dr. Hammer also served as the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Grant in Water Quality Control. Professor Hammer has taught at the King Fahd and King Abdulaziz Universities in Saudi Arabia where he conducted environmental engineering research in addition to his teaching responsibilities   Mark J. TONS of typos - from grammatical to vital data and labels in example problems. Following such problems is extremely frustrating at times.
Lots of things are not explained before they are referred to, causing you to go to the index and find the explanation and flip back and forth. Some things are referenced and never explained at all - including data used in solutions to example problems.

Rochman, an expatriate South African, selected these 10 stories by eight of her compatriots. As she points out in the introduction, the stories are grim; readers unprepared to confront the harsh realities of apartheid may well be shocked. The book opens with the brutal "Crackling Day" by Peter Abrahams, told by a black boy who gets a beating for having defended himself against a violent group of white schoolboys. Following that is "The Old Chief Mshlanga" by Doris Lessing, which is more subdued, but just as upsetting. Nadine Gordimer is represented by "Country Lovers" and "A Chip of Glass Ruby." Other stories describe a young black boy's father being taken away by police, the unlikely camaraderie between a white soldier and a black guerrilla, the silence of a rainy night in a black township after a firebombing. These thought-provoking tales present a stunning indictment of apartheid, although some contain powerful sexual references that may not be suitable to younger members of the target age group. Somehow Tenderness Survives is a worthy companion for other collections such as A Land Apart (Penguin, 1987), edited by Andre Brink, African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1985), edited by Chinua Achebe, and The Penguin Book of Southern African Stories (1986), edited by Stephen Gray. Although for the most part the stories in this latest collection are simple, even understated, in style, they are subtle. Reading this anthology may help high-school students to grasp the complex idea of how the most private corners of life are affected by systematic restriction and injustice. Life of Apartheid

This collection of short stories tells about the pain of living under the system of apartheid, from all points of view. Some of these stories are about black people who have to live as inferiors for their entire lives, while others are about white people who realize what kind of system this really is. No matter what side the speaker of the story is on, all of the stories tell of realization and pain and they exhibit over and over again what a bad way to live apartheid was.

I liked that each story was slightly different--some were about the rich, others about the poor, and every author had a different theme and a different purpose. I didn't feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. I tend to not like short stories, though, because they don't have the time to develop the characters to the extent I'd like. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters after each story ends.

An eye-opening book.

I was forced to read this book when I was in 6th grade; a few of the stories were selected by our reading teacher, and we were to read and comment on them. Given that it was a school assignment, I was not looking forward to it. However, I ended up devouring the entire book that same night. Growing up in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood meant I had never encountered the issues of apartheid and racism that the characters in this novel endured. Needless to say, I cried while reading the majority of those stories. It really opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, where it wasn't safe to be black in a country that was predominantly black. For the last four years, I taught special education in a junior high and a high school, and I used at least one of these stories each year to give my students a different perspective, and to help teach empathy. I highly recommend this book.

Revolutionary

I first read this book when I was about 12 years old. I didn't understand it all at the time. It led to asking many questions and reading history, trying to find some answers. A powerful book.

A disappointing, almost lazy finish to what had promise

I really enjoyed the first two books, and immediately read this third installment. It was such a let down. First, the book feels like it's mostly dialogue. There's very little action, and it's mostly the characters solving problems by talking it out. With such an exciting premise that had a lot of potential it was very disappointing. The intriguing idea of mythical gods among us was brilliant, but Card drove the potential into the dirt. Second, he takes it from being an interesting fantasy tale into strong religious territory and you lose the core of what the story was, and could have been because Card is so busy trying to force it to become a Mormon allegory. The conflicts are resolved so easily and with such little effort that it almost becomes boring.

Disappointing

I finished this book and immediately thought "WFT" Seriously, the tone of this book is LEAGUES from the 1st one. The 2nd one, while not as good as the first one, at least read as if it was being written by the same author. This one appears to have been ghost written by some weirdo who really like to put some people in the same space and spew unrelated stupid bull to each other. Then there are the long long long long long conversation that are REALLY boring. Also, new completely different magic system that screws up everything, new small enemies from nowhere and the families, which are the big bad in the 1st 2 books are really just a small nuisance in this one and are really only an afterthought. VERY disappointed and if this was more than a trilogy, i would NOT buy a 4th book.

Maybe my anticipation was too high. Also this is somewhat spoiler laden.

Pretty much what everyone has said... 1st book left it so it could go anywhere-limitless possibilities . 2nd book seemed like he was in a pickle with an all of a sudden cliff hanger. Then this one... Just 'thinks' it's problems away. When Danny has a challenge he simply figures out a solution in a page or so. Most awesome supporting characters get a cruddy dead end character plateau. I thought there was going to be a war in this one. And real conflict. Not that I'm against happy ending books. But Danny pretty much had no tough choices this book. I would rate it lower based on the ending, but since I did enjoy parts I decided to give it 2. Really the huge conflict at the end is like.... 3 or 4 paragraphs basically(with set) . Then the families are like yeah okay we'll comply no big deal. I've been looking forward to this book for a long time now and it's like phantom menace scale of a let down. Sure darth maul is awesome and is one of the best light saber fights yet... But everything else is disappointing.

Must Buy for Parents, Early Intervention Practitioners, Preschool Special Educators,anyone interested in learning more about ABA

This book is amazing!!!! What I love most about the book is that it's easy to read and the curriculum is easy to implement. I found everything I was looking for in terms of what to teach and how to teach it!!!! Anyone working with children with autism will have the confidence in their own ability to implement best practices from this book.....from parents with children with autism to a seasoned professional.

Great Reference for DTT Trials

I was looking for books providing lists of DTT Trials for young children on the autism spectrum. My young son has ABA therapy on a daily basis and I want to be sure I have a long list of trials that will get him as ready as possible for Kindergarten. This book is very helpful. Lists many trials AND has a CD so you can print them off and not ruin the book. HUGE bonus. The trials not only give you good ideas on what to teach your child, it actually explains how to present the trial as well. Combined with A Work in Progress by Ron Leaf & John McEachin, I finally found 2 books that are really helping to individualize an ABA program for my 3 year old son.
