About the Author

Constantin Cranganu is a professor of geophysics and petroleum geology at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. He obtained a PhD degree (ABD) from the University of Bucharest, Romania  (1993) in geophysics and another PhD from the University of Oklahoma (1997) in geology.

Before coming to Brooklyn College, he worked at “Al. I. Cuza” University of Iasi, Romania and the School of Geology and Geophysics of University of Oklahoma. His main research covers various areas of petroleum geosciences: oil and gas generation, abnormal fluid pressures in sedimentary basins, gas hydrate exploitation, identification of gas-bearing layers using well logs, geostatistics, etc. Lately, Prof. Cranganu started using artificial intelligent approaches in his petroleum-related research. He published many books, peer-reviewed articles, book reviews and essays. His paper, “Using gene expression programming to estimate sonic log distributions based on the natural gamma ray and deep resistivity logs: A case study from the Anadarko Basin, Oklahoma”, (co-author Elena Bautu), published in Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering in 2012 was nominated for ENI Awards 2012.

Mihaela Elena Breabăn is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, Romania. She is teaching Databases and topics in Probabilities and Statistics, Data Mining and Natural Computing. She obtained her PhD in 2011 from Al.I.Cuza University with a thesis on unsupervised data analysis focused on clustering and feature selection. Post-doctoral research she conducted during Oct. 2011-Mar.2013 was focused on the subject of feature extraction. She conducted research periods at the National University of Seoul (2008), University of Massachusetts at Boston (2010), University of Coimbra (2012) and Goldsmiths University (UK, 2013). She was member in several research projects (CNCSIS-A national grant, CNCSIS-PNII 11-028/2007 partnership among national universities, PN-II-ID-JRP-2011 ERA NET-CHIST-ERA international partnership) and director of a national research project (CNCSIS PN-II-RU-TD-198). She was awarded a doctoral scholarship by participating in a national competition (CNCSIS-BD). She is member of the program committees of several conferences in the field of Computer Science. She is member of the organizing committee of the international doctoral summer school ECODAM.

Henri Luchian is a Professor of Computer Science at ”Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iasi where he teaches Computer Architecture, Data Mining and Natural Computing.
He is a Vice-rector of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University since 2004. He received his PhD in Mathematics/Computer Science in 1994 from "Babes-Bolyai" University of Cluj-Napoca. Result of his rich research activity, he gave several invited talks: University of Sapporo (2013), University of Tokyo (2010), University of Edinburgh (2010), Athens University of Economy and Business (2005), National University of Singapore (September 2003), University of Perugia (May-June 2002), University of Konstanz (June-July 2001), Universite des Sciences et Technologies de Lille (June 1999), University of Sheffield (April 1999), Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, (September 1998), Universitat Konstanz (July 1998), Universite Aix-Marseille II, Marseille (July 1997). He is member of the scientific committees of prestigious evolutionary computing venues: IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computing, IEEE Transactions on Data and Knowledge Engineering, IEEE Conference on Evolutionary Computation - since 1995, Parallel Problem Solving form Nature - since 1998. If You Could Only Read ONE Book On Investments, This Is It

Eleven years ago, I retired from a successful, 30 year career in financial services, the last 20 as a Financial Consultant for two major Wall Street firms. Now, I manage my own portfolio in retirement. This is the best book on investments that I have ever read and I have read many of them. There is really too much to comment on for a concise review, since there is so much wisdom and knowledge packed in "Random Walk's" 447 pages. All I can say is that it is written in a very engaging style and it has so many take-aways that any individual investor can use to great advantage in their own investing and financial planning.

I do have one major area of disagreement. In my experience, most investors need the advice and counsel of an investment professional. We all need someone to check our egos, challenge our assumptions, and to be a voice of reason that fights the emotions of fear and greed that can consume us at market tops and market bottoms and cause us to make bad decisions. Maybe it is a fee only adviser, maybe it is a low fee money manager that uses an index fund, MPT, random walk approach. I understand that several of the discounters are testing such services.

So, read this book, then take notes and apply its lessons to your portfolio. If you don't understand parts of it, then educate yourself.

Great book, but not much changed from previous edition. If you have the 10th edition, save your money.

Great book, as always, but you can't really call this a revised edition when the only thing changed is an additional selection about "smart-beta". If you have the 2012 tenth edition, save your money and research "smart-beta" on the internet.

Thank God for Active Traders

I have no beef against the active traders. Maybe I have a little pity for them, since half of them have to lose money if the market’s a zero-sum game. That’s more than half, once you start to factor in fees.

I have long ago realized that though I am interested in the workings of the market, I am not going to delve to the minutiae of companies and different trades and try to be smarter than someone else on the other side who thinks he’s doing the same thing. Nope. Malkiel and Bogle figured out a way I could get away with making the most return possible with the least effort possible - indexing.

Basically this book is a defense of the efficient market hypotheses, or at least part of it. As I understand it, there are two parts to the EMF. One is that the price is always right. So that there’s no such thing as a bubble ever because all the valuations of the market price of securities are representative of their underlying value. The other part is that there’s no free lunch. Or basically arbitrage opportunities may exist, but they are not predictable nor do they persist. I think that the second part is more true than the first, and that’s what this book really digs into, showing you that there are no persistent ways to beat the market. If that’s true, then the best way to consistently make money is to just buy the market. Thankfully there are financial instruments that make that possible - and they’re where I have my money. Cards on the table, this book is just a giant exercise in confirmation bias for me, but it is confirmation bias well done in clear writing with a well-organized structure. I read this burning through the pages on a long holiday weekend, and I wanted to send it to my parents. I thought again about that. It might be too late for them since I don’t know their financial positions. Maybe I’ll send it to my siblings.

A final note, though. Even though Malkiel shows convincingly that there is no way to beat the the market, there is an odd paradox. For the market to work, it needs people out there who think that they can beat the market. Even if the best strategy is to buy and hold a low cost index fund, if everyone did that liquidity and price discovery would drop. What someone following Malkiel needs is people who think he is wrong and that they can generate “alpha” (returns above the market). This goes against the second part of the EMF, where arbitrage opportunities can’t exist because if you have a way to beat the market, then everyone has a way to beat the market and then once everyone is in, no one has a way to beat the market.

A life changer (if you let it change it)

This book had such influence in my life that I fell compelled to contact the author privately.The author will embark with you in a journey from your childhood to the present day. This journey is not intended to be filled with nostalgia and good vibes though, it will be vivid and - possibly - cruel as it was back then, but in the end you will understand how necessary it was to relive all of those memories. This book IS NOT the usual self-help book with tricks and things to say to yourself. Sure, it has some tips on how to get rid of some of the mental traps you're in, but the main purpose of this book is to understand deeply why you are feeling this way. Having this knowledge, you're already in the way to relief. "It's your birthright to be happy", it was only when I first read this in this book that I realized that deep inside of me I didn't feel I was worthwhile of any happiness at all. This book is now a must have for me. I have to re-read from time to time, to get me in the right track. I couldn't thank you enough, Terry. One of those books that make you notice they mean a lot to the author.

I love this book! Our local library doesn't have much, if anything, about backyard habitats for kids. I loved the pictures and the kids and I had fun using it to see if we could see those birds in our yard. It has been a wonderful supplement to our science curriculum this year!

Coding Club books excellent for youth beginners

I am not a programmer but I wanted to get my kids and some friends started with an after school club, with me as teacher/facilitator. The Coding Club books were ideal. They're visually appealing and well organized. They offer challenges for those who can handle them, but also allow everyone to get the programs working.

I "taught" (guided) the kids through books 1 and 2. I found book 3 to be too complex for me to teach, and also better structured for the kids to engage on their own, working at their own pace. They love the game-style apps.

I recommend this series for 8-15 year olds beginning their exploration of programming.

I use it for an afterschool club and the kids like the simplicity of the examples. They are able to understand the concept all while having fun.
