About the Author

Vera Brosgol was born in Moscow, Russia, and emigrated with her family to the United States as a child. She has a degree in Classical Animation and currently works as a storyboard artist at Laika, Inc. Her work can be seen in the recently released Coraline.

The Russian Girl

This is a great graphic novel for young teens -- especially girls -- with a well-paced story and plenty to say about social anxiety, body image, friendship, and ghostbusting. Anya is a 9th or 10th-grader at a lower-tier private school (not unlike the one I went to), who is embarrassed by her immigrant past. Her family came to the US from Russia when she was five, and she has worked very hard to lose any accent, eat American foods (while not becoming plump), dress properly, and generally fit in as an American teen. However, the signs of her angst are literally postered all over her bedroom: Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Neko Case, The Shins, Metric, etc. -- all perfectly good bands, but indicative of an underlying wistfulness. (Had she been of my generation, there surely would have been at least one Smiths and one Cure poster.)

One afternoon, she falls down a hole in the park and makes the acquaintance of a ghost from 1918 named Emily. She's been hovering over her skeleton for years, mourning the death of her fiancee in WWI, and herself at the hands of a murderer. One of Emily's bones gets into Anya's bag by accident, and when she'd rescued, Emily is able to hitch a ride to the surface. Before too long Anya and she become friends, with Anya spilling her insecurities to her new gal-pal ghost as Emily tries to help her succeed at school, fashion, and with the boy she has a crush on. Of course, as anyone who's watched a teen makeover comedy knows, there's always danger when the geeky girl tries to rebrand herself according to the conventional norms.

The final third of the book takes a rather menacing turn as Anya starts to realize that even the shiny popular kids have issues lurking just below the surface. This is all kind of John Hughes 101) type stuff (there's even a subplot involving a nerdy Russian kid whom Anya shuns but then has to turn to for help), but it's well done and the high contrast artwork brings it to life in a way that's neither too cartoony nor too realistic. Based on the brief author bio on the back, it sounds like many of the themes are autobiographical, as are many aspects of Anya's personality -- which is probably why it feels so dead on. Great stuff for girls in the 10-14 range or thereabouts, and still fairly entertaining for others.

Anya's Ghost -- Essential for Every Graphic Novel Lover

Vera Bosgol's graphic novel Anya's Ghost is a tale of an angst-ridden, curvy teenage girl who attends Catholic school. Her family's from Russia, although her years of time in ESL have trained her to abandon her embarrassing accent in order to fit in with her peers. A fellow classmate, Dimi, is also from Russia, but his shameless love of his culture--along with his large glasses, funny haircut, and general dorkiness--earn him regular beatings at school. Anya has done everything in her power to avoid this, including refusing to eat the greasy Russian treats her mom fries up in the morning. While her brother bounces around, eagerly awaiting his delicious meal, Anya is clearly above this sort of behavior.

The story begins with Anya walking to school and encountering her boyish friend Siobhan (more specifically her only friend), who pesters Anya for cigarettes and becomes angry when she is offered none. Infuriated by this argument, Anya storms away into a nearby forest on her own. Unfortunately, an open well goes unnoticed and she falls into it. She amazingly winds up with nothing worse a sprained wrist, but now she has concerns whether she will be rescued from the bottom of the well. A skeleton is her only companion deep in the well--that is until a homely ghost named Emily greets her. Emily tells Anya she has been trapped in the well for ninety years after a gruesome murder. The reason she never tried to escape can be attributed to her pile of bones, which she can never depart from.

After being rescued, Anya reluctantly allows Emily to be her friend by wearing a small finger bone around her neck. She quickly discovers the benefits of having a ghost as a friend, however, as Emily can sneak answers from classmates' tests and peek into the locker of a handsome boy to find his schedule. As the story moves along, their relationship changes, and so does Anya. Ultimately, Anya must make a major decision regarding Emily.

Although Emily claims she had a fiancé before her death, this is rather hard to believe: the character is clearly drawn as if she's an eleven-year-old girl who has yet to reach the puberty stage. Her large and poofy bob, schoolgirl jumper, and noticeably flat chest only emphasize this. But apparently the author had a different (and confusing) idea for her age. Regardless of this minor flaw, Brosgol has drawn Anya's Ghost impeccably and with great care. It's not surprising she was a storyboard artist for the film Coraline, as the entire graphic novel could essentially serve as a storyboard for an animated film--not to mention several similarities with Gaiman's story.

Brosgol's impressive storytelling skills seamlessly weave through moments of being touching, funny, and thrilling. The genre is difficult to pinpoint, as it has elements of horror, drama, coming-of-age, comedy, and more. Anya's weight troubles, crush on the popular basketball star, and awkward attempts to blend into society may especially resonate with young women, but regardless of age or gender, this is a book that will be enjoyed by many. With hints of Coraline, American Born Chinese, and perhaps even Persepolis, Anya's Ghost is already destined to be an essential on the library of every graphic novel fan--and hopefully beyond that. Anya's Ghost won't take the average reader very long to read, but it's worth every single penny.

Neil Gaiman says it best "A masterpiece"

I first started hearing about this graphic novel a couple of months ago and it immediately caught my attention. How often does Neil Gaiman lend his praise to a work? And then I started seeing the sample pages that First Second released and I was captivated by the illustrations. So needless to say I was really looking forward to reading this book (I kept trying to find someone that would let me read it an ARC because I was so excited about it.) And the book doesn't disappoint at all. It's the perfect story for young and old alike that deals with so many of the same issues that we all face--anxiety about who we are, body image, who are friends are, and growing up just a little bit.

Anya is a young teenage girl in high school who is embarrassed by where she and her family came from...Russia. She's trying hard to fit in by losing her accent, wearing the "right" clothes, going on diets, and trying to hang out with the "right" people...in other words not the nerdy Russian boy in her class. But...try as she might she doesn't fit in with the crowd that she really wants to...the popular ones. And then one day, she falls down an abandoned well in the park and meets a skeleton...and the ghost of the young girl from 1918 named Emily. Emily has been forgotten about and can't wander far from her skeleton and was just waiting for someone to come back and visit her. She keeps Anya company as she waits to be rescued, which she soon is, and one of Emily's bones hitches a ride...and Emily's ghost follows. Although there's trepidation at first Emily soon becomes Anya's confidant and helping her get the right answers on exams, making suggestions about what to wear, and help Anya get the attention of her crush. But things soon take a darker turn when it's revealed Emily isn't who she said she was and Anya must protect her family from Emily's darker nature.

This is a powerful debut full length graphic novel for Vera (she's done a couple of short stories before) and it's a wonderfully told story. It's a tightly woven tale with mystery, intrigue, and some growing up as well for all of the characters, not just Anya. It moves along at a nice pace and we get a strong sense of who the characters are and what motivates them. It's one of the best stories I've read in a while and unlike some other writers going from short features to full length, Vera doesn't suffer from having gaps in the tale or missing elements. And the illustrations are reminiscent of some old black and white horror films with juuuust the right amount of depth to them without being overly cartoony.

It's a fantastic read and I can't say enough good things about it. I highly recommend it to all and I look forward to seeing what Vera does next.

Great Girls Group!

This is a great intervention program for girls in the school. The lessons need to be adapted to the time frame of an actual school day as there just is not enough time to do multiple activities in one session, but the girls LOVED this group. I will use it over and over. I also enjoyed all of the printable materials and resources. It is a well thought out program and it is a great package.

If you run a girls group or are on a mission to empower girls - get this book. It is full of group counseling acitivites that rock. One of my favorite activities is called Self-Esteem Suit of Armor. It is a really neat activity on brainstorming how to protect self-esteem. If you want stress free planning and a curriculum that gets results in group counseling, then get this on your shelf. I work as a school counselor and this curriculum has worked really well with my 3-5th graders.

Useful curriculum for group counseling for elementary school aged girls!

This group counseling curriculum is currently being used for a group of fourth and fifth grade girls by a counselor-intern I am supervising. It is organized in a manner that makes it easy to select starters and other activities to increase self esteem, teach social skills and help in resolving conflicts due to relational aggression. We are very pleased with this useful product.

About the Author
Frances Sizer, M.S., RD, FADA, is certified as a charter Fellow of the American Dietetic Association. She is also a founding member and vice president of Nutrition and Health Associates, a Florida-based information and resource center that maintains an online bibliographic database tracking system that conducts research in more than 1,000 topic areas of nutrition. In addition to the best-selling NUTRITION: CONCEPTS AND CONTROVERSIES, Sizer was a primary author of the first ever instructional and animated NUTRITION INTERACTIVE CD-ROM (Cengage Wadsworth). Her previous publications include NUTRITION CLINICS, a monograph series for health professionals, and the college text THE FITNESS TRIAD: MOTIVATION, TRAINING, AND NUTRITION. In addition to writing, enjoying her family, and schooling her horse in dressage, Sizer is also an active board member of ECHO, a local hunger and homelessness relief organization in her community. Sizer received her B.S. and M.S. in nutrition from Florida State University.

Ellie Whitney taught biology at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University. An avid writer, she published numerous articles on environmental matters, and coauthored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics. Now retired, Dr. Whitney focuses her efforts on climate change, volunteering full-time for the nonpartisan Citizens Climate Lobby. She earned her BA in English at Harvard and her PhD in Biology at Washington University.

Get the text, not ebook

Next time I would buy the text so at least there would be some sell-back value. Hard to read on Kindle as pages didn't fit well and I had to constantly zoom in and out. If you need the interactive nutrition program to figure out a diet plan, get the text as it is included, otherwise you will need to buy that access code separately and it will end up costing you the same as the hardcover.

I am so glad to have received this book. I have seen the prior editions and searched for the best text and I really wanted access to the most current information. The reading is interesting and the discussions allow me to apply the information instead of just reading about it.

Easy to read, great price.

I rented this book for a nutrition class I was taking in college. The price was affordable and it arrived fast. Upon arriving the book was in near perfect condition with few signs of use. The book very informative and I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn about proper nutrition, even if you aren't taking a class on it.

I need to say that there are some good things in this book and some people can benefit ...

*Edit - I am a bit slow to do it, but I would like to say that I received good correspondence from the author and I was impressed with her responses. She is really trying to help us and research the best way to do it. So I am changing my review to 3 stars because while my criticism of the book is still valid, I feel like I was unfair about its strong points.So a more fair rating would be 3 stars.

First of all, I need to say that there are some good things in this book and some people can benefit from reading it. Also, Sabrina looks like a really nice girl who has been through a lot of pain and I'm sure she is genuinely trying to help. I'm sure Eric is trying the same, too.

With that said, I have to say that the advice in this book is not only not helpful, it can be dangerous at times. It's not that the authors are bad people. But before you start following what this book preaches, keep this in mind - Eric Charles is a big fan of Eckhart Tolle and a lot of his work is influenced by him. Living in the moment, labels don't matter, you need to enjoy the relationship as it unfolds... If you are a die-hard fan of Tolle, then nothing I say will change your mind and you will love the advice in this book. But if you happen to think differently and are open to the possibility that Tolle's New Age movement is more like a cult, then pay attention.

This book is full of excuses for men. Now of course, men are not the enemy, but some men are definitely to be avoided. The book is quite dis-empowering to women - it can turn you into a coy girl waiting for the guy to commit instead of pursuing your own agenda in relationships. I know because that is what reading all their articles turned me into. Of course, I'm just one case, so maybe it will be a different experience for you. But what the book prescribes is not based on any data or research, but on opinion - opinion influenced by Eckhart Tolle's teachings. The most dangerous idea in this book is the idea that the real reason men cheat is because they don't feel like winners. I can understand why Sabrina believes that - Eric cheated on her and he rationalized it this way. Now he wrote a book together with her and of course that he doesn't think that men cheat because they are as*holes - that would mean calling himself an as*hole. Also, it feels good for us women to have a feeling of control - as long as I make him feel like a winner, he will not cheat. However, research shows that the main reason men cheat is because they can. They don't need to have anything missing in the relationship in order to cheat. Do some men cheat because they are unappreciated? Sure. Is this the main reason men cheat? Science says no. People cheat because of their own bad character, especially if it happens more than once. Men's narcissism is a great predictor of cheating and narcissists surely feel like winners!

Another dangerous idea - men are not trying to hurt you. While it's true that most people are not trying to hurt you, some definitely are. And then there are some others who are not trying to hurt you but see you as nothing but an object to use and dispose of. And then there are those who do see you as a human being but will throw you under the bus if it suits them. Some people just can't be trusted and shouldn't be trusted, especially if you are giving them your body. The book doesn't warn you about such guys (and girls, of course). They can hurt you so much that you have no idea what hit you. And no, they are not necessarily sociopaths, there are many untrustworthy people who are not sociopaths but they are still not to be trusted. And you are more likely to meet such men because they are more attractive and more promiscuous. If a girl reads this book, and then goes and meets a good guy, this will not be that big of a problem. But if she happens to meet an untrustworthy guy (and she is likely to, because such guys try to hook up with as many women as possible, giving all men a bad name), then her trying to be understanding with him will backfire spectacularly. But this book makes it seem like it's all her fault for not giving him enough freedom. This may not be the intention of the authors but this is the message that comes across. If you are dealing with an as*hole who's breaking your heart, someone cheating on you, lying to you, playing with you, using you, a much better resource is "Character Disturbance: the phenomenon of our age" by Dr. George Simon. It is also a good resource if you want to avoid getting hurt by getting involved with the wrong people in any type of relationship. Contrary to what you might think after reading Sabrina's book, a guy not wanting to commit is not your biggest worry.

The way they talk about sex in this book is also dangerous. The book makes it seem like there is something wrong with a woman feeling attached after having sex. The solution they offer? Don't get attached. Eric even describes one incident when he lost interest after having sex with a woman because she became too clingy. Well, good rationalization, but what about the Coolidge effect? Maybe that's a more plausible explanation. And wouldn't a better course of action for this poor girl have been something like "Don't have sex with him before he commits". This would have prevented him from losing interest in her. But why would Eric recommend such an approach? He wouldn't. He likes his uncommitted sex. He doesn't know how much it hurts for a woman. So more rationalizations and zero science and facts. A much better advice is instead of trying to be unattached after sex (which only comes naturally to some women), just don't have sex before the guy is head over heels in love with you and has committed to you. But that would not fit well with Eckhart Tolle's philosophy about living in the moment.

The book also says that there is a way to communicate your worries to a man without nagging him... But never tells you what these ways are. So you are left wondering and feeling like you just didn't "get" it when in fact it was never explained. It gives no practical solutions, just some feel-good vague explanations. I don't see how this can change anything. If you are having a problem with guys not committing, I strongly recommend "Having Sex, Wanting Intimacy: Why Women Settle for One-Sided Relationships" by Dr. Jill P. Weber (you can check out her blog, too). And if you are just looking for a relationship, a great read could be "Love Factually: 10 Proven Steps from I Wish to I Do" by Dr. Duana Welch - a very practical book based on scientific research.

Another problem with this book - it's true that men want appreciation and freedom, but... every single human does. These are basic psychological needs. And everyone who has studied persuasion knows that the best way to make someone comply with your agenda is to reinforce their freedom. This is not anything specific to men. And it doesn't mean you don't pursue your own agenda or influence men in other ways. It's just that forcing them is not an effective method to get what you want. And yes, you need to satisfy the basic emotional needs of your partner, but it's important to also make sure that he satisfies yours. This book keeps on telling women to ignore their own needs for connection and security and to be happy without satisfying them. This is just not possible.

If you are in a relationship and want to make it better, or just want to make all your relationships better, then I strongly recommend "Feeling good together" by Dr. David Burns. It is an amazing book that gives you practical advice on how to communicate and has helped me stop fighting with my boyfriend and solve other conflicts with other people. And it is based on solid evidence from scientific research. I hope this helps someone.

If I knew these 10 things when I was younger, I would not have been divorced.

After I got divorced, I vowed to myself that I would not get married again before I dont understand the mind of a man, or the stuff men are made of. For the past nine years, I have devoured every book on relationships, am following relationship gurus such as David Wygant, ANM and a few others. As time past, I have realised and understood and began to practice the things Sabrina is talking about in this book, such as appreciating a man for who he is, and not what he can give you, for just enjoying the time spent with a man, without expections of a fairy tale love, as lets face it, we are after all living in the real world! And I have seen how men adores you, spoil you, make you feel like a princess, is eager to please and prefer to be in your company and never, never let me hang, in fact, they keep on coming back, just because I show respect and gets him being a man, and appreciating his male energy. I can assure you, Sabrina`s advice is the real thing, and if only we were brought up with this understanding, instead of the Hollywood love stories, there would be less drama in relationships. Im happy that finally, one person manage to put the truth about how great a man is, with just a bit of appreciation and understanding from a woman. Its all in one book, you do not need to look any further if you want to know what to do to have the loving attention and adoration of a man. DONT JUST READ IT, CHANGE YOUR MINDSET AND LIVE IT TRULY EVERYDAY, AND YOU WILL BE A HAPPY WOMAN NEXT TO A GREAT MAN! Sabrina and Eric, you guys are doing some amazing work here, and the world will become a better place due to this very insightful work you are doing through ANM, thank you for sharing your life experiences and for having the determination to work so diligently on this every day! YOU ARE THE BEST of ALL THE REST!

Capture this book!

I first was turned onto “A New Mode” (the original website) when I found myself waist deep of what I now call “Silly Dating Books”. Books that distorted my perception. Books that gave me rules & not principles. My mindset went from being very optimistic and clear, to impulsively overthinking every male movement. I questioned myself, my personality, my looks, & listened to too many friends. I was confused as ever. (And I can only imagine how confused guys were).

In this empowering piece of literature, the author Sabrina Alexis (and co-author Eric Charles) lay down a beautiful foundation of how to be true to yourself while evoking what you want in a straightforward approach. There is a self improvement feel throughout the book that shows you how to transform & have a healthy mindset that we as women seem to lose while dating. It is a reference that helps you grasp the bigger picture. She is raw but refined, & writes with sincerity. You really feel she was in your stilettos in every occurrence.

Quite honestly, I was bummed at first when I saw there was no hard copy. (I’m a tangible person that likes to keep technology to a minimum). But, I quickly found out that having a hard copy couldn’t of had the magical links to previously published articles. It’s a lot of fun. (He’s Just Not That Into You; Just Turn Lesbian surely did not have that feature).

Just the texting section alone is gold. I cannot wait to recommend to my next girlfriend that asks me, “Jess, he just stopped texting. What do I do?!” (I give it 10 more minutes until this book has another sale ;)

Good book, but If you can't find the online media, read this.

So far, the book is great. I have been working with Win 2012 R2 for months, but this book helped me in some new topics.

Now, for the people who bought the Kindle Edition on Amazon and can't find the online media. Let me give you a step by step directions.

You have to go to the section "Free Interactive Online Study Enviroment" on your book. You will see a link to http://sybex.com/go/mcsawin2012r2. There, select this book, MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Study Guide: Exams 70-410, 70-411, 70-412, and 70-41. Click Login, then "GET ACCESS CODE".
Then on "SELECT YOUR PRODUCT", again, select MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Study Guide: Exams 70-410, 70-411, 70-412, and 70-41, type you name, email address, and answer the question ABOUT the book. They will ask you something like: "In Chapter 13, what is the last word in the Summary section at the end of the chapter".
Because you have the digital book, type the anwser, and they send you an access code by email.
Then go back to the http://sybex.com/go/mcsawin2012r2 and then you will have access to: Practice Exams, Assessment Test, Chapter Tests, Flashcards, and the Video or Audio included.
