Pro Mundo - Pro Domo: The Writings of Alban Berg contains new English translations of the complete writings of the Viennese composer Alban Berg (1885-1935) and extensive commentaries tracing the history of each essay and its connection to musical culture of the early twentieth century. Berg is now recognized as a classic composer of the modern period, best known for his operas Wozzeck and Lulu. Berg, Anton Webern, and their teacher Arnold Schoenberg constitute the "Second Viennese School" which played a major role in the transformation of serious music as it entered the modern period.

Berg was an avid and skillful writer. His essays include analytic studies of compositions by Schoenberg, polemics on music and musicians of his day, and lectures and miscellaneous writings on a variety of topics. Throughout his considerable and diverse corpus of writings, Berg alternates between two perspectives: Pro Mundo - Pro Domo, meaning roughly "speaking for all - speaking for myself" commenting at one moment on the general state of culture and the world, and the next moment on his own works. In his early years he also tried his hand at fictional writing, using works by Ibsen and Strindberg as models. This new English edition contains 47 essays, many of which are little known and have not been previously available in English.

About the Author

James Allen was born in Leicester, England, in 1864. After the unexpected death of his father, he left school at age fifteen in order to help support his family. For the next twenty-three years, Allen worked, read, and observed the world around him. At age thirty-eight, he wrote From Poverty to Power, one of the first motivational books. His next book, As a ManThinketh, established his reputation as an inspirational writer. Although his writing career lasted only ten years, until his death in 1912, Allen produced twenty titles, which continue to motivate and inspire.

Educated at Columbia University, Dr. Harold Silverman has been a hospital pharmacist, industry consultant, author, and educator for more than 35 years. Dr. Silverman’s professional objective is to help people understand why medicines are prescribed and how to get the most from them.

In addition to The Pill Book, Dr. Silverman has also authored The Women’s Drug Store, The Pill Book Guide to Safe Drug Use, The Consumer’s Guide to Poison Protection,and Travel Healthy. He is also a co-author of The Vitamin Book: A No-Nonsense Consumer Guide and The Med-File Drug Interactions System.

Dr. Silverman has contributed more than 70 articles, research papers, and textbook chapters to the professional literature, including The Merck Manual of Medical Information, Home Edition. He has taught pharmacology and clinical pharmacy at several universities and has won numerous awards for his work. Dr. Silverman resides in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife, Judith Brown, and their son Joshua.

I do not like the new format

I do not like the way this book is organized. The difference between this format and past formats is that they group all of the drugs into categories and generalize the information accordingly. For instance, they classify all painkillers under "narcotic analgesics" and then they speak on general terms about narcotics. If you are looking for specific information for oxycodone, for example, you cannot get it. You just get generalized information that applies to all narcotic analgesics. Also, there are very few pictures. If I could, I would trade this book out for an earlier version. It does not serve the purposes that I needed it for.

A must have for any intelligent family.

With all the different drugs on the market today and taking into consideration the possibility of drug interactions and side effects, it is vital to stay informed. Recently my wife was prescribed two different medications by her doctor. Taking them together could have been a threat to her life, neither the druggist nor the prescribing doctor warned her about the side effects that would take place if she took both medications within 4 to 6 hours of each other. The Pill book did! GET THIS IN YOUR HOME! Think generics are exactly the same as brand name drugs? Think again!

Pill Book solid but not outstanding

As a master's level clinician working in the mental health field for almost 10 years, I did find the Pill Book to be helpful. It gives excellent information about brand names, generic names, original uses for medications as well as other important aspects such as other uses, common to rare side effects, etc.

The only part that I didn't care for was that I was unable to take the name of a medication and look it up following the pages in alphabetical order. So it wasn't as user-friendly as some of the other books like this I have used in the past. But I was able to utilize the table of contents for a certain medication and that seemed to work better.

Overall, a solid job but with a few tweaks it could have been outstanding.

somewhat helpful, but sloppy and confusing

TONS of typos - from grammatical to vital data and labels in example problems. Following such problems is extremely frustrating at times.
Lots of things are not explained before they are referred to, causing you to go to the index and find the explanation and flip back and forth. Some things are referenced and never explained at all - including data used in solutions to example problems.

Rochman, an expatriate South African, selected these 10 stories by eight of her compatriots. As she points out in the introduction, the stories are grim; readers unprepared to confront the harsh realities of apartheid may well be shocked. The book opens with the brutal "Crackling Day" by Peter Abrahams, told by a black boy who gets a beating for having defended himself against a violent group of white schoolboys. Following that is "The Old Chief Mshlanga" by Doris Lessing, which is more subdued, but just as upsetting. Nadine Gordimer is represented by "Country Lovers" and "A Chip of Glass Ruby." Other stories describe a young black boy's father being taken away by police, the unlikely camaraderie between a white soldier and a black guerrilla, the silence of a rainy night in a black township after a firebombing. These thought-provoking tales present a stunning indictment of apartheid, although some contain powerful sexual references that may not be suitable to younger members of the target age group. Eight authors are represented by ten stories; the writers are black and white and range from the much-anthologized Doris Lessing, Nadine Gordimer, and Mark Mathabane to less-familiar names like Dan Jacobson and Ernest Havemann. Somehow Tenderness Survives is a worthy companion for other collections such as A Land Apart (Penguin, 1987), edited by Andre Brink, African Short Stories (Heinemann, 1985), edited by Chinua Achebe, and The Penguin Book of Southern African Stories (1986), edited by Stephen Gray. Although for the most part the stories in this latest collection are simple, even understated, in style, they are subtle. Reading this anthology may help high-school students to grasp the complex idea of how the most private corners of life are affected by systematic restriction and injustice. Life of Apartheid

This collection of short stories tells about the pain of living under the system of apartheid, from all points of view. Some of these stories are about black people who have to live as inferiors for their entire lives, while others are about white people who realize what kind of system this really is. No matter what side the speaker of the story is on, all of the stories tell of realization and pain and they exhibit over and over again what a bad way to live apartheid was.

I liked that each story was slightly different--some were about the rich, others about the poor, and every author had a different theme and a different purpose. I didn't feel like I was reading the same thing over and over. I tend to not like short stories, though, because they don't have the time to develop the characters to the extent I'd like. I'm always left wondering what happened to the characters after each story ends.

An eye-opening book.

I was forced to read this book when I was in 6th grade; a few of the stories were selected by our reading teacher, and we were to read and comment on them. Given that it was a school assignment, I was not looking forward to it. However, I ended up devouring the entire book that same night. Growing up in a suburban middle-class white neighborhood meant I had never encountered the issues of apartheid and racism that the characters in this novel endured. Needless to say, I cried while reading the majority of those stories. It really opened my eyes to a world very different from my own, where it wasn't safe to be black in a country that was predominantly black. For the last four years, I taught special education in a junior high and a high school, and I used at least one of these stories each year to give my students a different perspective, and to help teach empathy. I highly recommend this book.

I first read this book when I was about 12 years old. I didn't understand it all at the time. It led to asking many questions and reading history, trying to find some answers. A powerful book.
